      Domestic Abuse in Homelessness Settings

This course will provide you with an introduction to domestic abuse, looking specifically at how it might impact on service users in a range of homelessness settings. This course will have two main focuses. First we will look at the dynamics of domestic abuse, helping you to understand what domestic abuse looks like and how it impacts on service users. The course also aims to increase your confidence in responding to domestic abuse, giving you practical tools and skills to support service users, reduce risk and increase safety. Using a range of case studies and real life examples of service users who are living in supported accommodation, or are street homeless, the course will explore the complexities of identifying and responding to domestic abuse in these settings, especially where service users are likely to have multiple needs. Delegates will leave the course with practical tips and tools that they can use in their everyday working practice. Who is this course for? Frontline homelessness workers with basic or limited knowledge of domestic abuse. Frontline homelessness workers with little experience in the field. Staff from other sectors who have contact with homeless people/people with complex needs. What will you learn? At the end of the day you will: Know the definition of domestic abuse and be able to recognise key forms of domestic abuse and what this might look like in your service. Understand how domestic abuse interacts with other forms of disadvantage, and how this creates barriers to support. Feel more confident working out who is doing what to who, and have better awareness of perpetrators in your services. Feel more confident talking with survivors about abuse, identifying risk and taking action e.g. referring on, safety planning etc. Delegates will be provided with a handbook of resources. Please note: due to the sensitive nature of this training course, delegates might feel anxious or upset by some of the course content if it relates to their own experiences. It is essential that they are aware of the course content beforehand, in order to be emotionally prepared for the day. Please ensure that all delegates read this course outline ahead of the training. They will be able to step out during the session if needed. There is no requirement for delegates to share personal experiences on this course.
