      Content Overview  Morning sessions A light breakfast will be provided on arrival Inheritance Tax And The 10%: the first session of the day will provide attendees with an update on inheritance tax rules and the tools available when planning estates. James Mohide, Senior Tax Manager at Paradigm Norton Financial Planning in Bristol, will give his advice on what to look out for and how to best instruct your clients when considering their portfolio. Items covered will be: Lifetime planning to minimise potential IHT liabilities - maximising reliefs and exemptions though charitable giving and legacy donations IHT and family business - including Business Relief  Use of trusts and family investment companies Business Relief Schemes – options, pitfalls and gimmicks Pension Death Benefits & Bypass Trusts Let’s Talk Cancer: Cancer Research UK’s Head Information Nurse, Martin Ledwick, will be sharing advice on how to manage potentially difficult conversations with clients who may be suffering from cancer, have received a terminal diagnosis, or are making a Will because they have been recently bereaved. Networking and lunch (lunch is provided) Afternoon sessions Topic: Mental Capacity Edward Hewitt, Barrister at 5 Stone Buildings, was counsel in James v James and Kunicki v Hayward and will use these and other recent cases to provide a practical insight into how the courts approach challenges to wills based on lack of testamentary capacity, what evidence is and is not particularly helpful and what steps can be taken at will drafting stage to reduce the risk of a subsequent challenge. Dr Richard Roope, GP will detail medical understanding of mental capacity and symptoms solicitors should be aware of when client facing. He’ll outline options for requesting assessments and how solicitors can support a client’s journey through assessment. Matt Glaze, Solicitor at Cancer Research UK will present on how charities such as Cancer Research UK make decisions to contend or defend their claim to an estate and what legal obligations they have as beneficiaries. Panel Q&A: presenters will join us for a panel discussion. Questions can be submitted in advance by email to the organiser and will be prioritised, although there will be opportunities to ask questions on the day. This event also provides excellent networking opportunities from across the legal sector. This event equates to 5 hours CPD.
