Bristol Keyboard Festival : Clare Hammond

Schumann Humoreske Op 20 Hywel Davies Elternszenen Szymanowski Variations on a Polish Theme Op 10 Acclaimed by The Telegraph as a pianist of 'amazing power and panache', Clare Hammond is recognised for the virtuosity and authority of her performanceIn 2016, she won the Royal Philharmonic Society's 'Young Artist Award' in recognition of outstanding achievement while in 2020 she gives her debut recital for the International Piano Series at the Southbank Centre. Schumann's multi-movement Humoreske is a Romantic piano cycle reflecting the composer's many emotions at the time of writing, and Szymanowski's Variations on a Polish Theme Op 10 composed in 1904, is rooted in the Romantic tradition with its virtuosic arrangements based on Polish folk song. They are divided by a new Clare Hammond commission from composer Hywel Davies, Elternszenen, a work resembling Schumann's Kinderszenen both in its form, as a series of short character pieces, and its title, which suggests how the piece should be played rather than imposing a narrative. The new work reflects on Hywel's experience of parenthood, as Schumann reflected on his experience of childhood.
