ARThub11 Exploring the Potential of Watercolour with Lisa Takahashi

This course is for two consecutive Sundays. Lisa Takahashi is professional linocut printmaker and painter who has been exhibiting extensively across the UK for the past 15 years. Her recent shows include being accepted for the Society of Women Artists, The New English Art Club, The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Royal Watercolour Society Contemporary Watercolour Competition. In 2017 she was shortlisted for the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize in London and in 2018 she reached the semi-finals of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year. Course objectives : To explore the potential of watercolour To develop understanding of how to get the most out of paints, brushes and mediums To take a closer look at the building blocks of picture making in order to build painting confidence. Course outcomes :  Through a balanced mix of guided tuition and playful exploration, students will gain experience in painting expressive representational watercolour paintings. This 2 week workshop is all about celebrating watercolour and what we can do with it.  There are many reasons to adore watercolour. It is very portable, there are no need for solvents, and there are myriad ways to use them. Do not be fooled into thinking watercolour is just for gentle flower paintings - it can also produce vivid, colour saturated explosions of unadulterated expression!  In this workshop we will take a closer look at what effects can be achieved with watercolour simply by ‘trying and seeing’. By sharing what spills, washes, stains and blends we can make, students will soon develop the beginnings of a visual language with which they can communicate their ideas. Alongside loosening up exercises we will consider the building blocks of picture making - composition, tone and colour - eventually combining all that we learn to make a painting that reflects the vision of each artist. While previous watercolour experience is not essential, you will need an open mind and a willingness to try something new!
